Flattr makes it possible to donate small amounts of money to free contents on the web, that being written text, images, video, audio, or software. You pay a fixed amount of money (minimum 2€) to Flattr each month, who in turn divide your donation evenly among the places that you flattr. You flattr something by clicking an appropriate flattr button, much like up-voting on digg, reddit, or some other social media.
If you join Flattr and thereby support free contents on the web, you can put flattr-buttons next to your own contents and people can in this way donate money to you and encourage you to keep going.
You’re primary motivation to join Flattr, however, should be that you wish to support projects or contents that you like. The average user will lose money in the long run, because Flattr (obviously) takes a small cut of every user’s monthly donation. On the other hand, if you create well above average contents, you could be making money through Flattr.
Each month I gladly donate money to the people behind cool software projects and informative/interesting blog posts. I encourage you to do the same.
